Cataracts
How long does surgery take?
At Vision Surgeons & Consultants, Ltd., we perform cataract surgery
with a "no shots, no stitch, no patch" procedure. No shots
are needed because the anesthetic is a topical numbing drop or ointment,
specific to the eye itself. No stitches are needed, and no patch is
needed to cover the eye. As a result, our patients are in and out in
two to three hours, comfortable, and ready to go home.
Will I have pain? Does Cataract Surgery Hurt?
No. At Vision Surgeons & Consultants, Ltd. we use topical anesthesia
and sedation so that you will have no pain during or after surgery.
Will I have restrictions after surgery?
No. Visions Surgeons & Consultants, Ltd. performs micro-incision
surgery so no stitches and no patch are needed. You will be able to
return to your normal activities after surgery.
How can I prevent cataracts?
There is nothing known that can treat or cure cataracts at this time
other than surgery. Extensive research is being done to determine the
causes of cataracts. There is some thinking that life long exposure
to ultraviolet light may cause one type of cataracts. Cataracts may
also occur secondary to drugs such as steroids (prednisone). They may
occur at an earlier age due to certain diseases such as diabetes.

Glaucoma
Is there any way to prevent glaucoma?
There is nothing that can prevent glaucoma, but progression can be slowed
down or stopped with treatment. Regular eye exams can detect glaucoma
early. About half of people with glaucoma do not know they have it. Call
847-328-2300 or 800 653 EYES for an appointment to have your intraocular
pressure (glaucoma test) checked.
Will I go blind from glaucoma?
If glaucoma is found and treated early, and you take your medications
and follow-up regularly, it is unlikely that you will go blind. Having
regular eye exams and visual field tests are the best method of following
the glaucoma.
If a family member has glaucoma, will I get it?
You are at increased risk of glaucoma if it runs in the family. It becomes
more common as you get older. Only regular eye exams can determine if
you are developing glaucoma.
Can I continue to drive if I have glaucoma?
Most people can still drive with glaucoma, as long as you pass the vision
test at the DMV. That is why it is so important to have a regular glaucoma
test and catch it early before there is visual field loss.

hair
removal and ELOS technology
What is ELOS?
ELOS (electro-optical-synergy) uses a combination of light and radio
frequency to remove unwanted hair.
How does ELOS work?
ELOS uses both light and radio frequency electrical energy to remove
unwanted hair. The combination isolates and destroys the hair follicle,
leaving the surrounding skin unharmed. Using two energies gives more
effective results with lower overall energy.
Is hair removal with ELOS safe?
The lower light energy with ELOS safely removes unwanted hair leaving
surrounding skin unharmed.
Does ELOS work for everyone?
ELOS removes hair of all colors, including blond and gray, on all skin
types. It can be done on any area of the body with unwanted hair.
Is hair removal with ELOS painful?
Treatment produces a slight tingling feeling, and on the most sensitive
areas of the skin, a light pinch. Topical anesthetic can be used to
minimize the discomfort.
How many treatments are needed?
The number of treatments needed varies with skin, hair color and part
of the body being treated.
How long is each treatment and how long is the recovery?
The treatment can take from 15 minutes for a small area to over an hour
for a large area such as legs or the back. Patients can resume normal
activities immediately after the treatment.
What can I expect after the treatment and when will I get results?
Hair will gradually fade over a few weeks.
How often are treatments?
Hair removal with ELOS is done every 4 -6 weeks depending on the area
of the body.
Will the hair grow back?
ELOS permanently reduces hair. Everyone has dormant hair follicles which
can begin to grow. Some people will need occasional maintenance treatments
once or twice a year.

FOTOFACIAL RF
What is Fotofacial RF?
Fotofacial RF skin rejuvenation is a non-surgical treatment that uses
gentle pulses of light combined with low electrical energy to improve
the appearance of skin. This is called ELOS (electro-optical synergy).
It reduces brown spots, age spots, redness, rosacea, sun damage and
spider veins. It also reduces pore size, the appearance of fine lines,
and decreases hair.
How does it work?
ELOS uses two energies instead of one for more effective results with
lower overall energy output. Lower energy output is safer and more comfortable.
The combination heats the skin causing dilated blood vessels, pigmented
spots and hair follicles to gradually fade. The heating also stimulates
the production of collagen to lessen wrinkles and scars, smooth skin
texture and diminish the size of pores.
Who can benefit from Fotofacial RF treatments?
Women and men who want clearer, smoother and more radiant skin can benefit
from Fotofacial RF treatments. Anyone who has rosacae, sun damage, freckling,
and irregular pigmentation will benefit from Fotofacial treatments.
Active people who want to improve their skin, but do not want to interfere
with social or outdoor activities will appreciate the improvement Fotofacial
treatments will provide. Fotofacial RF can be done on light and medium
skin tones (skin types I to IV). It is not done on tanned skin. Men
can also benefit from Fotofacial RF but since it may reduce hair, caution
is needed in the beard area. Hair removal can be performed on all hair
colors and skin types.
What areas can be treated?
FotoFacial TM treatments can be used on any part of the skin. They are
especially effective for improving the appearance of the face, neck,
and chest.
What are the treatments like?
Depending on the area to be treated, each treatment takes 20-45 minutes.
A topical anesthetic can be used 30 to 60 minutes before the treatment
for those who desire it. Immediately following the treatment, the skin
may look slight red and flushed and tiny blood vessels may be more visible.
Brown spots may get darker. All of these changes gradually fade over
a period of a few hours to a few days.
How is Fotofacial RF performed?
Fotofacial RF skin rejuvenation is performed in a series of sessions
every 3 to 4 weeks. In between Fotofacials, microdermabrasions are performed
to exfoliate the skin and improve results. Tans need to fade before
treatment can begin. Sunscreen is recommended during and after treatment.
The fall and winter months are the optimal times to have skin rejuvenation,
although it can be done anytime as long as skin is not tanned.
Is it painful?
Fotofacial RF is not painful. ELOS technology by allowing lower energy
levels improves comfort and safety. Patients may feel a tingling sensation
and in more sensitive areas, a light pinch, which is very brief.
What results can I expect?
People with visible aging from the sun can expect to see their skin
become smoother with a decrease in fine wrinkles, reduction in pore
size and a fading of sun spots. You can expect to see a gradual decrease
in overall redness, flushing and dilated capillaries. Many people with
rosacea see an improvement in breakouts and are able to decrease or
discontinue their medications.
How long is the recovery from Fotofacial RF?
Fotofacial RF is a minimal downtime procedure. Patients may return to
their daily activities immediately. Dark spots and broken capillaries
may be more noticeable for the first week but then will begin to fade.

MICRODERMABRASION
What parts of the body can be treated?
The face, neck, back, stomach and hands are the most common areas treated.
When can I return to my normal activities?
Immediately. We recommend sunscreen routinely especially after the procedure.
How long does it take?
It takes approximately one hour per treatment. Treatments are usually
done 1 to 4 weeks apart. Five or more treatments may be recommended
initially until your skin is at the level you desire. We then recommend
maintenance treatments every 4 to 8 weeks. Patients who take retinoids
or glycolic acid should stop 2 days prior to the procedure, and resume
those 2 days after the procedure. Patients taking Accutane should consult
our office.
Who should consider microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is suitable for all skin types. It is ideal for treatment
of acne in children and adults. It is excellent for anyone interested
in improving the appearance of: scarring, fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation
problems, uneven skin tones, dull, lifeless and sun-damaged skin.
What are the side effects and does it hurt?
Microdermabrasion is very safe. It is not painful. Initially, you may
feel a slight scratchy sensation. As the treatment continues, it feels
almost like a massage. There may be mild redness for a few hours the
procedure and you will be slightly more sensitive to the sun.
