Overview
|
Blepharitis Blepharitis is a common inflammation of the oil glands at the base of the eyelashes. This causes the oil to back up in the glands. Symptoms include burning, irritation, itching, and redness of the lid margins. If untreated, it can cause stys, conjunctivitis and corneal disease. It may also cause no symptoms. It is a chronic condition that can be controlled, but generally not cured. It is treated with special attention to lid hygiene including warm compresses followed by lid scrubs. It may occasionally be caused by infection and require treatment with antibiotics.
It is detected by examination with a slit lamp microscope during routine ophthalmologic exams. Warm compress: Take a wash cloth with warm water and hold it over your closed eyes for 3-4 minutes. Do not use hot water (test the temperature on check if needed). This loosens the oil. Do this once or more times a day, as needed. Lid scrubs: Take baby shampoo and dilute it with water. Take the diluted shampoo and clean the base of the lashes. You can use a cotton ball, Q-tip or your finger, whatever is easier to scrub the lashes. Do this after the warm compress once or twice a day as needed. Artificial Tears: This can be used throughout the day, anytime your eyes feel irritated. Use a brand of tears that is only moisturizing with no allergy or red-out. If you continue to have symptoms or you have questions,
