Restylane is a cosmetic filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles such as nasolabial folds. It is frequently used in combination with Botox. It is made of hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally as a large sugar molecule (polysaccharide) in the basement membrane of skin. It does not produce any allergic reactions and therefore does not require skin testing. It is injected with a small needle under the skin. Correction of the lines and folds lasts about six months. The procedure is very well tolerated. Cover-up make-up may be applied immediately following the injections and downtime is eliminated or minimized. The vast majority of patients do not experience any need for interruption of work or social obligations. Restylane requires finesse and care for appropriate results. What is Restylane®?
Restylane® is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds.
What is Restylane® made of?
Restylane® is a crystal-clear gel composed of Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid called NASHA™. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body that provides volume and fullness to the skin. NASHA is biodegradable and completely biocompatible with human hyaluronic acid.
How is Restylane® different than other hyaluronic acid-based products?
Unlike rooster-derived hyaluronic acids and bovine collagen products, Restylane® is free from animal proteins. This limits any risk of animal-based disease transmissions or development of allergic reactions to animal proteins. Restylane contains trace amounts of gram-positive bacterial proteins, and is contraindicated for patients with a history of allergies to such material.
What should patients do prior to treatment?
Restylane® requires no pre-testing, however patients should take a few precautions before being treated. Avoid using aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, St. John's wort, or high doses of Vitamin E supplements prior to treatment, because these may increase bruising or bleeding at the injection site. Also, if you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another recurrence. Ask your doctor about treatments to minimize symptoms.
Is Restylane® safe?
Yes. Restylane® has been used by dermatologists and plastic surgeons since 1996 worldwide. There is limited risk of animal based disease transmission or allergic reaction. Restylane is fully biocompatible and pre-testing is not required. Restylane contains trace amounts of gram-positive bacterial proteins and should not be used by patients with a history of allergies to such material. After your treatment, you might have some redness or swelling. This will normally last less than seven days. Sunbathing and cold outdoor activities should be avoided until any redness or swelling disappears. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18, you shouldn’t use Restylane.
Can Restylane® be used anywhere on the face?
Restylane® has been used in more than 3 million treatments in over 60 countries to correct a variety of wrinkles. In the U.S., the FDA has approved Restylane for wrinkles and folds like the ones from the nose to the corners of the mouth. Your doctor will consult with you prior to your injection regarding common treatment areas.
How long does Restylane® last?
Restylane® is proven to deliver long-lasting results. Studies have shown that Restylane effects generally last for about six months.Restylane’s patented stabilization process helps maintain the cosmetic effect until the injected material is nearly gone.
How often should I have Restylane® treatments?
Treatments are typically scheduled at six-month intervals, or as determined by your physician.
How is Restylane different from Botox?
Restylane is a natural, cosmetic filler. In contrast, Botox is a drug that blocks nerve transmission and relaxes the underlying muscles.
How is Restylane different from bovine collagen?
Bovine collagen is derived from animals (cows) and requires an allergy test. Restylane can be administered without pretesting, so no waiting is required. With Restylane there is limited risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction. Restylane contains trace amounts of gram-positive bacterial proteins and should not be used by patients with a history of allergies to such material.
Do the injections hurt?
Restylane is injected directly into the skin in tiny amounts with an ultra fine needle, resulting in minimal discomfort. The procedure is simple and convenient, and results are practically instantaneous. To optimize your comfort during the short procedure, your physician may anesthetize the treatment area.
How much do Restylane treatments cost?
Restylane is a customized procedure based on your specific needs, so the cost will vary from patient to patient. In general, the cost of Restylane should be comparable to the cost of similar procedures. Because Restylane lasts about six months, it may be very economical over the long term. Please consult your physician to determine the best recommendation for your particular needs.
Are there any rewards programs associated with Restylane that provide users with incentive to use Restylane?
Yes, there is. It is called Restylane RewardsSM. Once a patient receives their first Restylane treatment, they may enroll in this rewards program. After each treatment, they’ll be rewarded with cash rewards that grow over time. A special bonus-a voucher good for $200 off a future Restylane treatment-is awarded after the fifth follow-up treatment completed within six-months.
